On this edition of The NOLADrinks Show with Bryan Dias, we’re back with our first new show of 2020 after our holiday break and we’ve got a great one. Jeff “Beachbum” Berry and David Wondrich return to the show to talk cocktails and much more. We’re at Belle Époque, the fine new French Quarter absinthe lounge.

We kick things off wishing everyone a happy new year and letting you know about this week’s and next week’s show. The latter is a discussion about the Turning Tables program that seeks to train and place persons of color in the bartending world.

Then, we’re off to Belle Époque, the terrific new absinthe lounge and restaurant located behind the historic Old Absinthe House on Bourbon Street in the French Quarter.

We’re joined by two of the foremost cocktail historians around, David Wondrich and Jeff “Beachbum” Berry. ICYMI – be sure to catch the last time these two were on the program in July from Tales of the Cocktail here.

We discuss all kinds of interesting things including the lost Tiki cocktail, “The Saturn,” and the somewhat mysterious man behind it, Popo Galsini. Both Jeff and Dave have interesting insight into the drink and the “lost Tiki master” who created it. See Dave’s recent piece on the topic for The Daily Beast here.

Among other things, we talk about consommé and bouillon-based cocktails like the “Bullshot” and other variants. It was a thing, largely, in the 50’s through the early 70’s.

Of course, as any time these guys are on, this description just scratched the surface of what we chat about. Jeff and Dave stick around for our podcast-only segment, “Another Shot with NOLADrinks,” where we carry-on with the fun!

Be sure to catch the “celebrity walk-on” by Belle Époque bar director, Laura Bellucci letting us know about one of the lovely absinthe-based cocktails she made us!

We close things out with our Parting Shot discussing the idea of, perhaps, being in a new era of absinthe (I think we are)!

The map below shows the location of Belle Époque as well as Jeff’s Latitude 29, both in the French Quarter of New Orleans. You can subscribe to, stream, and download the podcast of The NOLADrinks Show with Bryan Dias using the links and player at the top of this post!

Cheers, You All!
