On this installment of The NOLADrinks Show with Bryan Dias, we discuss cocktail lists (and lots of other stuff!) with noted cocktail historians and authors Jeff “Beachbum” Berry and Dave Wondrich. We chat about their history, development, and some ideas for the here-and-now.

NOLADrinks Show – 7-29-19 – Cocktail Lists with Jeff “Beachbum” Berry and Dave Wondrich

We kick the broadcast off letting you know what’s on tap with this week’s show. We also let you know about this weekend’s Satchmo Summerfest here in New Orleans and remind you of our French Quarter Fest Series – check it out here. Of course, we also spin some music in and out of the breaks in the first part of the show by the late, great Art Neville.

Then, we’re off to Tujague’s for our featured interview with Jeff “Beachbum” Berry and Dave Wondrich. They are two of the foremost cocktail historians and authors on the planet! They recently delivered a seminar at Tales of the Cocktail 2019 on theme of cocktail lists or menus. They bring that topic (and much more) to us on the show!

We touch on the origins of these lists and trace their development and trends over time. It’s an interesting story that touches on the history of cocktails themselves. We discuss numerous aspects such as design, how much info is just right, how these lists disappeared, and, now, along with the cocktail renaissance of recent years, they’re back.

It’s not all history and nostalgia. Part of the seminar also informed participants about tips and ideas for making a good cocktail list today. We touch on a few of these aspects in our chat, as well.

Dave and Jeff stick around for our podcast-only portion – “Another Shot with NOLADrinks” – for a wide-ranging chat. It’s not to be missed! We talk about dive bars, how time stops in great spots, and much more! Dave and Jeff are a wealth of knowledge and insight and we have a blast waxing philosophical about watering holes and other related stuff!

We close things out with our “Parting Shot” borrowing on the theme of time standing still when you’re in the right establishment. The map below shows the location of Latitude 29 (Jeff and his wife Annene’s Tiki spot in the French Quarter) and Tujague’s. Thanks to the latter for hosting!

Cheers, You All!

~ Bryan
