On this week’s show, we have three great segments lined-up for you…

First up, we are over at Latitude 29, the terrific French Quarter Tiki bar operated by cocktail historian Jeff “Beachbum” Berry and his wife Annene. We’re joined by Jeff along with their head bartender and GM, Brad Smith.

For the first handful of minutes we discuss their holiday “Sippin’ Santa” program. Then, we move into a conversation about the Planter’s Punch cocktail, its long and sometimes hazy history, and how it forms the “blueprint” for Tiki cocktails to this day. We also discuss the importance of allspice in the world of Tiki drinks including the famed Navy Grog.

For the full episode of this show, check out the post here.

Next, we pull our “Another Shot” chat from a recent December show where we talked about the year that was in beer in 2019. We talk with our resident beer experts Matt Horney and Sal Mortillaro about some trends and ideas to look for in 2020!

Lastly, we’re joined by two cocktail legends from a show in September – Julie Reiner and Dale DeGroff. This conversation came on the heels of Tales of the Cocktail 2019 where Julie and Dale were connected to a cocktail competition. Entrants were tasked with creating and naming a cocktail inspired by a woman in their life or from history.

During this “Another Shot,” we talk about the changing landscape for women in the spirits and cocktail industry including the increase in female master distillers and craft cocktail bartenders. Though many things have changed, much for the better, there is still a ways to go and we touch on some ideas and incidents that reflect that. We also discuss the importance of inclusivity in the industry.

If you’d like to hear the full episode with Dale and Julie, please check out this post.
