On this week’s The NOLADrinks Show with Bryan Dias, we welcome two prominent members of the cocktail world – Dale DeGroff and Julie Reiner. Among other things, we discuss women in the cocktail and spirits industries, past and present. We also talk about the recent Marie Brizard cocktail competition, “Toast to HerStory.”

NOLADrinks Show – 9-23-19 – Dale DeGroff and Julie Reiner – Women in the Cocktail Industry – Marie Brizard “Toast to HerStory”

We start things off letting you know about this week’s show. We also let you know about the winner of the Marie Brizard “Toast to HerStory” cocktail competition, Jena Lane Ellenwood, that we discuss on this week’s show. We share the specs on her award-winning cocktail, “The Songbird of Manzanar.”

Then, it’s our featured interview with two pioneers of the contemporary cocktail movement, Dale DeGroff and Julie Reiner. Dale is a noted bartender and author and Julie, similarly, is a well-known bartender and bar owner.

Dale and Julie share their backgrounds and how they met. We chat about the cocktail scene in the late 90’s and early 2000’s in New York City and how they, among others, were involved in the modern cocktail scene there that has had so much influence globally on today’s landscape.

Also, our main theme for today’s show is discussing women in the spirits and cocktail world. We also chat about the Marie Brizard brand of spirits that was started by Marie Brizard and her business partner, Jean Baptiste-Roger in 1755. We sample three expressions from their extensive line and weave that into our chat.

As we noted at the top of the show, Marie Brizard sponsored a cocktail competition this year that culminated with five finalists competing at Tales of the Cocktail this year. Julie and Dale were the judges and they let us know the winner, Jena Lane Ellenwood, and her winning drink. The competition was called “Toast to HerStory” and competitors were charged with not only creating a compelling cocktail but also naming it after a woman they deemed influential for them.

We close out the radio portion of the show with more discussion on cocktails and the spirits we taste. Dale and Julie also let us know about how you can connect with them. You can find out more about Dale, his writings, and what he’s up to at KingCocktail.com. Julie can be found at her two fine establishments in Brooklyn, New York – Clover Club and Leyenda.

On “Another Shot with NOLADrinks,” Dale and Julie stick around for a more detailed conversation on women in the spirits and cocktail industries. We talk about how the landscape has changed in recent years (with a lot of work still to do!). Julie lets us know about her experience in the industry and the importance of inclusivity. We touch on some historical aspects, as well.

We close things out with a few thoughts on women and inclusivity in the bartending world on our “Parting Shot.”

The map below shows the locations of Julie’s two NYC spots – Clover Club and Leyenda. You can subscribe to, stream, and download The NOLADrinks Show with Bryan Dias podcast using the links and player at the top of the post!

Cheers, You All!
