On this edition of The NOLADrinks Show with Bryan Dias, we welcome spirits broker, educator, and consultant, Phil Minissale of PM Brokerage. We talk about what a spirits broker does and also explore some fascinating selections as part of our ongoing “Liquid Luggage” series.

We open the show letting you know what’s happening on this episode.

Then, we’re off to our featured interview with Phil Minissale, a New Orleans-based spirits broker, educator, and consultant. Phil lets us know a bit about what a spirits broker does and how his business, PM Brokerage, fits in and works along the spirits supply chain.

Next, we do something a little different! Just prior to the coronavirus pandemic occurring, we teamed up with Phil to deliver an ongoing series called, “Liquid Luggage.” The idea is to bring you background, tasting notes, and more on various interesting spirits that are out there. We also share cocktail recipes (often in collaboration with a bartender – that will return soon!) that you can make at home or at your bar.

What’s different? Normally, this would be a podcast-only segment. But, since we’re pleased to bring it back to you after a brief interruption due to covid-19, we decided to do two new episodes. The first, “Liquid Luggage #2” aired on radio and “Liquid Luggage #3” aired as the featured segment on “Another Shot with NOLADrinks.” These will be available as stand-alone episodes in the coming days.

In “Liquid Luggge #2” we explore a couple interesting and price-friendly whiskeys from Deadwood. We also sample By The Dutch Old Genever and talk about this interesting traditional spirit, an antecedent of gin. Then, we whip up a Negroni variation – “The Dutch Negroni” featuring the Genever. It’s delicious!

On “Another Shot with NOLADrinks,” we feature “Liquid Luggage #3!” On this episode, we explore three Latin American spirits that demonstrate a true sense of place (something PM Brokerage focuses on with everything in their book.) These are El Buho Mezcal from Mexico, Macchu Pisco “La Diablada” pisco from Peru, and Träkál, a new spirit from Patagonia in Chile. Phil also whips a delightfully fresh and easy cocktail featuring Träkál!
