On this installment of The NOLADrinks Show with Bryan Dias, we’re pleased to welcome back our good friend, Jeff “Beachbum” Berry. We discuss the Singapore Sling, the Daiquiri, rum, and more. We also discuss the effects of the covid-19 pandemic on his establishment, Latitude 29, as well as further thoughts on how it will affect the bar and restaurant scene moving forward.

We start things off, briefly, letting you know what’s up on this show. Then, we kick it over to our featured interview with Jeff “Beachbum” Berry by phone from his home in Metairie, Louisiana.

First up, we touch on how Jeff and his wife Annene along with their general manager and head bartender Brad Smith are working through the current situation and how it affects their French Quarter Tiki bar and restaurant, Latitude 29.

Then, we discuss the interesting cocktail, the Singapore Sling. We chat about its supposed origins from the Raffles Hotel in Singapore but also about the “sling” as a drink (which predates the cocktail appearing at the hotel by at least three or so decades.) We also talk about some of the recipe variations and more.

Next, we talk a bit about how Donn Beach, aka “Don the Beachcomber,” came to rely on rum as the basis for most of his drinks as opposed to other spirits, such as gin – this relates to our Singapore Sling chat.

Before closing out the radio portion of the show, we talk about the daiquiri and its unclear (like so many other drinks!) backstory and more.

Jeff sticks around for our podcast-only segment, “Another Shot with NOLADrinks.” We tie-up some loose ends on the daiquiri and then discuss the coronavirus and its effects on the bar and restaurant scene. Jeff shares some of his thoughts on how the landscape may look and change as we move through this.
