On this edition of The NOLADrinks Show with Bryan Dias, we’re discussing plastic straws along with the larger issue of single-use plastic products and plastic pollution, overall. We’re joined by Jane Patton, a plastic pollution expert. We also talk with New Orleans bar owner, T. Cole Newton, at his new place The Domino (along with a cocktail demo!) and Emma Rose Cohen, CEO of The Final Straw.

NOLADrinks Show – 10-7-19 – Plastic Straws and Plastic Pollution

We start things off with a quick open and letting you know what’s up for this week. We also let you know the specs on our cocktail demo at Domino (just to clarify – see below.)

Then, we’re off to Tujague’s for our featured interview. We’re joined by plastic pollution expert, Jane Patton, of No Waste Louisiana and No Waste NOLA (among other things.) We discuss plastic straw use and how though they are a tiny fraction of the plastic pollution problem, they are emblematic of the situation and can serve as a way to connect with and understand the broader issue – ideally, leading to a behavioral change.

Up next, we head over to the new New Orleans bar, The Domino, owned by T. Cole Newton, who also operates Twelve Mile Limit. Cole and his team are working to reduce waste in their bar program. We discuss what they do and their use of biodegradable straws. We are also treated to a cocktail demo (gotta have some fun during this serious topic, right?) by Domino’s head bartender, Luis Zepeda. It’s one of their signature drinks, “The Bywater Sour.” You can see the video of this cocktail demo on our IGTV channel – @NOLADrinks. See the recipe below.

We close out the radio portion of our show with an idea for an alternative product to single-use plastic straws. It’s called “The Final Straw” – it’s portable, reusable, and easily cleaned on the go. We chat with CEO and founder of the company, Emma Rose Cohen by phone. Listeners of the show can get a special discount by using the promo code “noladrinks” on their website.

On “Another Shot with NOLADrinks,” we continue our conversation with Jane Patton. We discuss single-use plastic pollution, little known impacts of the problem, and how people of lower economic status (often along racial lines) are disproportionately affected. We also discuss certain things that bars and individuals can do to make a positive change.

We close things out with our “Parting Shot” on this week’s topic. The map below shows the location of both Tujague’s and The Domino (thanks to them both for hosting!) You can subscribe to, stream, and download The NOLADrinks Show podcast using the links and player above.

Bywater Sour – by The Domino:

1.5 oz bourbon
.75 oz lemon juice
.75 oz simple syrup

Shake well and stain into a rocks glass with cocktail ice. Top with a float of Manischewitz blackberry wine (or similar) float. Use a plastic straw alternative or nothing at all!

Cheers, You All!
