We welcome the Sazerac House’s Matt Ray to the show where we talk about the history of the drink, how to make it, next week’s events, and much more! We’re gearing up for Sazerac Cocktail Week! The series of events, both in-person and on-line, are based at New Orleans’ Sazerac House. We pay a visit to their lovely Charente Bar and are joined by their Experience Team Leader and friend of the show, Matt Ray.

We discuss the somewhat murky history of the famed Sazerac Cocktail – the official cocktail of the City of New Orleans. It’s a fascinating story with a lot that we do know (and much that we don’t). We talk about the drink’s roots in the apothecary world in the city and how the drink developed, by the mid-nineteenth century, to what we know it to be today.

We also talk about how to make it and chat about how the drink is very particular. Though it only has five ingredients, striking the proper balance is key and we delve into that including some slightly “allowable” variations in approach and key techniques.

Of course, we let you know all about next week’s Sazerac Cocktail Week’s events and how you can join in on the fun whether you’re in NOLA or not. The events will benefit and support New Orleans culture bearers through the Feed the Second Line charity. To boot, they’ve even created a special Spotify playlist that ties in terrifically with making and drinking a Sazerac and celebrating the city!
