On this week’s The NOLADrinks Show with Bryan Dias, we’re talking Port! Our guest is winemaker, Carla Tiago, of Kopke – the oldest Port wine house in the world, founded in 1638. Carla joins us from Portugal (the land of Port, of course!) We discuss what Port is, the typical grapes that are used, how it is made, their terroir in the Douro, and much more! We also taste through several of their expressions including colheitas, aged Ports, and white Ports! If you love Port or are “Port-curious,” this is the show for you!

The NOLADrinks Show with Bryan Dias – Carla Tiago of Kopke Port – 2022Ep34

This time around on The NOLADrinks Show with Bryan Dias, we are doing a deep dive on Port! Our guest is Carla Tiago, one of the winemakers for Kopke, the oldest Port winery in the world. She heads-up the Port program – they also make still wines.

Carla lets us know about the winery’s history beginning with its founding in 1638. We talk about what Port is and how it’s made. We discuss some of the different styles – Tawny, white Ports, aged Ports, and colheitas and how they differ. Additionally, we talk about the newly designated 50-year-old Port category.

Also, we learn about some of the principal grape varietals used in Port and what they bring to the table in the blend. We chat about their terroir and why the Douro Valley is THE place to make Port and is, of course, where it comes from. (These days, to be called “Port,” the wine must hail from this region of Portugal.)

We talk about their vineyards and harvest methods as well as touching on their sustainability efforts. In addition to their Ports, Carla also lets us know a bit about Kopke’s still wine program. Of course, we taste through and discuss several of their terrific Port expressions!

Cheers and Be Well, You All!
