On this important edition of The NOLADrinks Show with Bryan Dias, we discuss topics connected to sexual violence in the hospitality/nightlife industry. We are joined by three presenters from a recent Tales of the Cocktail seminar on the issue – Chauntel Gerdes, Amy Noto, and Christina Veira. This is part of our Sustainability Series.

NOLADrinks Show – 8-5-19 – Sexual Violence in the Hospitality Industry and Spaces

Starting things off, we let you know a bit about this episode. We also let you know more about the shows, such as this one, recorded at Tales of the Cocktail a couple weeks ago. Our new, ongoing “Sustainability Series” is touched on, as well.

Then, we’re off to our featured interview at Tujague’s. It’s an important episode that addresses sexual violence in the hospitality industry. Our guests are Chauntel Gerdes, a Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) experienced in sexual trauma and working with the hospitality industry; Amy Noto, a Provisional Licensed Professional Counselor (PLPC) with STAR; and Christina Veira, a veteran of the service industry and of working directly with these issues in Toronto.

As part of our Tales of the Cocktail 2019 coverage, this show was based on a seminar at the conference in which our guests presented. It was entitled, “What’s My Role? Responding to the Rising Need for Sexual Violence Prevention in Nightlife and Hospitality Spaces.”

Throughout the show, we discuss some of the issues at hand including the need to redefine some of the definition of “hospitality” and what it means for those who provide it and for those who experience it. We cover the need to shift the conversation and tackle many aspects of behavior in hospitality spaces that have become normalized, in various ways.

Additionally, we talk about boundaries and other related ideas for both hospitality industry members and guests. Some of the conversation also centers on what businesses and industry members, as well as guests, can do to take action and create a safer environment for everyone. We also let you know where you can find more resources and connect with our guests:

  • In New Orleans – Sexual Trauma Awareness and Response (STAR) – hotline: (855) 435-STAR.
  • Chauntel can be reached at Chauntel.Gerdes “at” gmail.com.
  • Christina can be reached at ChristinaVeira.pt “at” gmail.com or @ChristinaVeira on Instagram and Facebook.

Chauntel, Amy, and Christina stick around for “Another Shot with NOLADrinks” where we go deeper into the topic. We close things out with our “Parting Shot” on some of the outcomes from Tales of the Cocktail this year and how things connect with today’s show.

The map below shows the location of Tujague’s – thanks to them for hosting! You can subscribe to, stream, and download The NOLADrinks Show podcast using the links and player at the top of the post.
