NOLADrinks Show – 7-22-19 – Inclusivity in the Hospitality and Liquor Industries

We start the show off letting you know about this week’s important episode. We also let you know a bit about all the great things to expect from our coverage of this year’s Tales of the Cocktail event that just wrapped up in New Orleans last week.

Next, we head over to Sylvain for our featured interview. We talk about inclusivity in the hospitality and liquor industries. This includes a broad discussion of the issues and some of the challenges we as individuals face. It also includes how and why businesses must and should address these issues.

Our guests, a fantastic and talented panel who just gave a seminar at Tales on the subject, bring a wide array of viewpoints and perspectives to the chat. They are Yannick Benjamin of Wheeling Forward, Maggie Campbell of Privateer Rum, Samara Rivers of Black Bourbon Society, and Jackie Summers of Jack From Brooklyn. Please note: our guests have some serious credentials across the industry and well-beyond what I listed here and, if you don’t know them, they run down much of what they do on the show!

Various concepts are discussed including the differences between diversity, equity, and inclusion as well as the ramifications of privilege. We chat about “blindspots” that we all have in some form or another and how we can address them through challenging ourselves by considering the perspectives and realities of others. This can include (but is certainly not limited to) those with different ethnic backgrounds, physical ability, or sexual orientation.

We also talk about how businesses in the industry can strive towards inclusivity and why they should. We touch on the ethics of this and how it’s also good business. The idea connects to providing a better workplace for employees and a better experience for guests.

Then, we head into “Another Shot with NOLADrinks” where our guests stick around to further chat about these topics with some good laughs along the way, as well. Just listen, you’ll know what I mean (adults only!) We close things out with our “Parting Shot” talking about, among other things, how being critical of something doesn’t mean you don’t love it.

Thanks to Sylvain for hosting us and thanks to Tales of the Cocktail for helping us arrange this show. The map below shows the location of Sylvain. You can subscribe to, stream, and download The NOLADrinks Show podcast using the links and player at the top of the post.

Cheers, You All!
