On this week’s The NOLADrinks Show with Bryan Dias, we discuss wellness in the hospitality industry and an organization dedicated to doing something about it. We chat with Healthy Hospo’s US Brand Ambassador, Kristine Bocchino. We discuss the organization, their programs, and issues facing members of the industry as they seek work-life balance and good overall mental and physical health. We also talk about her career as a food and beverage professional and writer in Los Angeles.

We start things off letting you know what’s up on this week’s show as well as next’s (the second installment of our French Quarter Fest Series!) We also touch on this weekend’s plans in NOLA surrounding #BoycottBowl.

Then, we welcome Kristine Bocchino who chats with us by phone from Los Angeles for our featured interview. She is a longtime professional in the hospitality, food, and drink industry and the new US Brand Ambassador for Healthy Hospo. This relatively new non-profit was founded in the UK and is now expanding their programs to the US and other locations. They create and offer programs and training for members of the hospitality industry to assist them with personal wellness and maintaining work-life balance.

As we’ve discussed on the show before, many of us may not realize the difficulties some members of the industry face in their personal lives – working non-traditional hours, which can make activities such as exercise and having a healthy social life difficult. Also, substance abuse, personal finance management, high-stress work environments, and other issues can be problematic for these folks.

With Kristine, we chat about some of these issues, things she has experienced and witnessed first-hand in her career. We discuss how Healthy Hospo offers training, workshops, tailored programs for employers, and more that are designed to offer assistance and the practical skills and tools needed for success.

We close out the radio portion of the show learning about Kristine’s work and background in the food and beverage world. In addition to her work with Healthy Hospo, she is the beverage director for the historic Hotel Figueroa in Los Angeles. We talk about their program and the various bars and restaurants found in the establishment. We also touch on her work as a freelance food and beverage writer. She has contributed to such publications as Edible L.A. and Drops Magazine. She is also a noted expert on all-things-food-and-drink in Italy.

Kristine sticks around for “Another Shot with NOLADrinks,” our podcast-only segment, where we talk about the trend of low-ABV cocktails, some thoughts on the service industry, and, importantly, how Healthy Hospo will have a big presence at this summer’s Tales of the Cocktail and how industry members can get involved.
