NOLADrinks Show – 9-14-17 – Wines of South Africa and Fall Beer

We kick things off talking about some events around town taking place this weekend and a bit about today’s show. We also touch on the need to aid our neighbors to the west, victims of Hurricane Harvey, and, now to the east, those affected by Hurricane Irma in Florida and the Caribbean. Stay tuned for more on that next week.

Then, we chat with Jim Clarke, US Market Manager with Wines of South Africa (WOSA.) We discuss various aspects of that country’s fascinating wine history that is inextricably linked to its history as a cultural crossroads as well as Apartheid. We touch on some of these factors and generalize on where the wine industry is there today.

We talk about Pinotage and Chenin Blanc, two important varietals produced in South Africa. Then, we move on to discuss South Africa Wine Week taking place in New Orleans from October 30 to November 5. It’s the event’s inaugural year and we touch on what to expect when it goes down.

We’re pleased to announce, here on the NOLADrinks Show, that we are the official broadcast partner South Africa Wine Week in New Orleans! What does that mean? Stay tuned with us for much more on the story of South African wine and the upcoming event from October 30 to November 5!

Next up, we talk about beer! Sal Mortillaro, certified beer judge, and Matt Horney, brewmaster at Old Rail Brewing Co. join the show. It’s always fun and interesting to have these two guys on – their knowledge of beer is phenomenal. We cover different topics including fall beers and general ideas about seasonal brews, hops, the importance of water, alpha acids, beer agriculture, understanding style guidelines, and much more! Of course, we taste some great beers along the way, as well!

If you count yourself a fan of beer, this chat is not to be missed. It’s an in-depth conversation about the suds you love! Also, please note, if you are interested in becoming a certified beer judge in the New Orleans area, check out the exam that Sal is offering here
