NOLADrinks Show – 6-17-19 – French Quarter Fest Series – Robin Barnes and Doyle Cooper

We start things off letting you know what’s on the bill for this week’s show and next week’s show on the local craft beer industry. We also let you know about an important fundraising event taking place this weekend – “Just Cause – A Boozy Bake Sale for Reproductive Rights” – on Saturday benefiting Planned Parenthood and the New Orleans Abortion Fund.

Then, we’re over to see our friends at Louisiana Music Factory for our featured interview. It’s the next installment of our French Quarter Fest Series. This time around, we’re celebrating the upcoming Satchmo Summerfest happening the first weekend of August. The event celebrates the life, legacy, and music of the great Louis Armstrong and is put on by French Quarter Festivals, Inc.

Our guests, both of whom are performing at “Satchmo Fest,” are Robin Barnes and Doyle Cooper. Robin, known as the “Songbird of New Orleans,” does solo work as well as being the leader of Robin Barnes and the Fiya Birds. Doyle is a terrific young trumpeter that leads the Doyle Cooper Jazz Band.

We chat about their music and varied influences that inform their styles and approaches. Regular listeners of this show and this series know that putting “labels” on most local New Orleans musicians is a bad (and potentially misleading) idea! These two are no exception. But, our chat gives you a taste of what they do!

Beyond talking about music, we also discuss lifestyle and health issues that performers can face regularly working in clubs and bars. Robin also tells us about her initiative, “Move Ya Brass,” that offers music-driven exercise classes around town.

Next up, Robin and Doyle share some thoughts on the late, great Dr. John. Then, of course, we talk about Satchmo Summerfest and what the festival means to them and to the city’s music landscape. Robin and Doyle stick around for “Another Shot with NOLADrinks” where talk about the festival further and they share some thoughts on what it means, in a broad sense, to be a professional musician.

The map below shows the location of Louisiana Music Factory on Frenchmen St. as well as the New Orleans Jazz Museum, location of Satchmo Summerfest August 2-4. You can subscribe to, stream, and download The NOLADrinks Show with Bryan Dias podcast using the links and player above.

Cheers, You All!
