On this edition of the NOLADrinks Show with Bryan Dias, we chat with Aimee Brown, executive director of the New Orleans Wine and Food Experience (NOWFE) about the annual event. We then have our featured interview with Elizabeth Pearce and Abigail Gullo of Drink and Learn, which among other things, boasts a new podcast on the National Food and Beverage Foundation Podcast Network (along with this show!) We also tell you about how you can help protect the original home of New Orleans jazz pioneer, Buddy Bolden.

NOLADrinks Show – 5-3-18 – New Orleans Wine and Food Experience and Drink and Learn

We start things off letting you know about this week’s show. Importantly, we also tell you about how you can help preserve an important historical and cultural landmark – the original home of jazz pioneer, Buddy Bolden. It is in danger of collapsing due to willful neglect by its owner – a local church that wants to knock it down for a new building.

This home is an important piece of jazz history – an indigenous American artform that was born in New Orleans. As a city that depends on tourism, of which much is based on our musical and jazz heritage, for our economy, the lack of protection of many of these landmarks is shocking. You can help by writing a letter to the New Orleans City Planning Commission before their meeting on Tuesday, May 8. See more info here. You can send your letter to cpcinfo@nola.gov and please reference agenda item “055/18.” The church is seeking a variance to begin the process of erecting the new structure. Also, if you haven’t, please check out our recent episode where we interview jazz historian and tour guide, John McCusker. We discuss this issue among many other things connected to early jazz in New Orleans.

Next up, we chat with Aimee Brown (pictured at left), executive director of the New Orleans Wine and Food Experience (NOWFE). We talk about this annual event now in its 26th year here in town. We let you know about all the great activities that take place as part of NOWFE featuring great food from around the city and terrific wines from around the world.

This year’s NOWFE will feature wine tours, dinners, VIP tastings, the Royal Street Stroll, and, of course, the grand tastings. We let you know how you can do a lot or get just a taste!

We also ask Aimee, who is in her first year of taking over as executive director, about some of the challenges and other issues that have beset the event in recent years and how she and others are working to address those. It’s a signature event in town and in Aimee’s hands, it seems, that things are moving in the right direction again! The event takes place later this month with events kicking off on Wednesday, May 23rd and wrapping up on Saturday, May 26th. See more here

Thanks to our friends at Sylvain for hosting us during this interview.

In the second half of the show, we have our featured interview with Elizabeth Pearce and Abigail Gullo of Drink and Learn. We talk about their new podcast, which, like this show, is also a part of the National Food and Beverage Foundation Podcast Network. We discuss their backgrounds and how Elizabeth brought Abigail in to co-host the podcast with her.

We also talk about Elizabeth’s founding of Drink and Learn and what it entails beyond the podcast. We touch on various topics connected to the cocktail scene in New Orleans and beyond, too! Thanks to our friends at the Southern Food and Beverage Museum for hosting us during this portion of the show!

Below the map that shows the location of the Buddy Bolden home, Sylvain, and the Southern Food and Beverage Museum, you can subscribe to, stream, and download The NOLADrinks Show with Bryan Dias podcast

Cheers, You All!
