On this week’s The NOLADrinks Show with Bryan Dias, we’re having our regular beer chat! This time around, Matt Horney and Sal Mortillaro join us to talk about “fruit beers,” the recent Craft Brewers Conference, and a bit on beer judging.

NOLADrinks Show – 4-22-19 – Fruit Beers and More Beer with Sal and Matt

We kick things off with a short segment letting you know about this week’s show. We, then, head over to Old Rail Brewing Co. in Old Mandeville for our featured interview.

We’re joined for our regular beer segment with Old Rail’s brewmaster, Matt Horney, and newly-minted Grand Master beer judge, Sal Mortillaro. Matt let’s us know a bit about his recent trip to the Craft Brewers Conference held in Colorado. Sal also touches on how the testing process for becoming a certified beer judge works with the Beer Judging Certification Program (BJCP.)

Then, we get into the heart of our chat, talking about beers “made with other things” – namely, fruit beers. We talk about the process and the wide-range of styles and approaches out there. We touch on traditional expressions, such as Lambics, as well as contemporary and creative ones out there today.

Various ingredients are discussed as well as approaches to making these types of beers – not only in how flavor can be affected but also things such as mouthfeel. Matt shares and excellent example that he recently produces – “Migration.” It is a fruit-flavored “milkshake” IPA that demonstrates a lot of what we chat about.

We close things out on the radio portion of the show talking about an upcoming event Matt and Sal are involved with – the 8th Annual Larry Hartzog Twisted Beer Fest – a brewing competition and benefit for the local Humane Society.

Sal and Matt stick around for our podcast-only portion of the show – “Another Shot with NOLADrinks” – where we get further into the topic. We close out the show with our “Parting Shot” on the battle between the “Hand Grenade” and “Willie’s Cocktail” and all the plastic waste.

Cheers, You All!
