On this week’s NOLADrinks Show, we chat with three individuals who are part of the LGBTQ community in the bar industry here in New Orleans. We discuss issues and challenges they face working in the service industry behind the bar, as well as their backgrounds. We also cover some events around town and a few bits of beverage industry news.

NOLADrinks – 12-08-16 – LGBTQ community in the Bar Industry

We start off the show, as we usually do, talking about a few upcoming events in town of interest. We also talk a little beverage industry news including the shortage of blue agave in Mexico and how it will likely have a considerable impact on Tequila. Additionally, we also discuss cider and some of the issues connected to its shrinking market.

At the bottom of the first hour, we kick-off our What’s in Your Glass/What’s in your Bottle segment. This is where we discuss social issues connected to the world of drink and food in New Orleans and beyond. This time, we discuss the topic of the LGBTQ community in the bar industry.

We welcome Sam Perez of Catahoula Hotel and Ace Hotel, Royal Baugh of Seaworthy, and Johnny Sanders of Bar Tonique. All three are members of the LGBTQ community and are highly professional bartenders working in the larger New Orleans service industry. It’s a thoughtful discussion (with a lot of laughs thrown-in!) on issues, challenges, and attitudes they face in their careers. We then move on, briefly, to chat about what the three of them like to drink when it’s “on their dime.”

We close out the show with some further beverage news and notes. Lastly, we send a farewell shout-out to good friend of the show, Darrin Ylisto, formerly of Sylvain, who is moving on to Austin to start with a new restaurant venture.

Below the map that features the locations of where today’s guest ply their craft, you can stream, download, and subscribe to the NOLADrinks podcast!

Cheers, You All!
